the ripple effect

As we have all experienced, hardship is not a detour from life—it is part of the road itself. There are seasons that weren’t chosen and can feel inescapable. That weight feels permanent, and rarely is.

Survival doesn’t begin with grand gestures, but with smaller ones. The quiet acts of endurance are not weakness—they are the foundation everything else is built upon.

Survival becomes more serious, more life-changing and more consequential in adulthood. Shrinking the horizon is one way to help, especially when the full picture is overwhelming; commit to acts just for today, not next month or next year. Progress measured in minutes or hours is still progress.

A close family friend once said to me, “Difficulty has a texture and it shifts.” I’ve never forgotten that. The versions of us standing on the other side of these difficult moments carry a kind of strength that only comes with having been tested.

We are not behind or broken. As I tell my kids, “If you are in the middle of something, it won’t last, as middles, by definition, do not last.”

“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” Nelson Mandela
