A teacher told me once, “There are two types of people in this world – right brain and left brain.”
“I want to be both,” I said.
“But you’re not,” this teacher replied flatly. “You’re a right brain, and the sooner you realize it, the better off you’ll be.”
Hence, my eventual career in public relations.
Hello, everyone! My name is Lindsey and I am the new Client Services Partner here at dovetail solutions. As I write this initial blog post, I can’t help but reflect on my career and how I ended up in this ideal, exposed brick office in Larimer Square in Denver, Colo. Admittedly, the road was long.
Recently, I moved from New York where I began my career in book publishing, and then eventually transitioned to public relations. While I loved the energy and the people (surprising, I know), I knew when I visited Denver last year that I had “that feeling.” You don’t get it often. I imagine it must be like when you meet someone and know he or she is “the one.”
There was an inner voice telling me to move here. I wanted the lifestyle and the activity, but more so, I wanted the community. I was determined to find my way here, and after a few months I decided it was now or never, and I picked up and moved.
As I bid adieu to New York, my boss mentioned a public relations firm in Denver he had heard of “through the grapevine” –– dovetail solutions. I followed his lead – sending an email to Emily Holleran, and now two months later, here I am.
When I came in for the initial interview, I was immediately at ease with the way I was treated. Both she and Mary Kusek made me feel as though I was already part of their team, and as the interview process continued, I will always recall phoning my father back in Texas and telling him, “This just has to be it. They have to hire me. This is what I was looking for in a company.”
“Give it time,” he said.
I’m so grateful I did. Two weeks into my employment here, I can’t help but dwell on how comfortable the acclimation has been with both the clients and my coworkers. There’s always a learning curve, but when I started my career in public relations a few years ago, this is the atmosphere and the work structure that I anticipated in my life.
I am a right-brain thinker, it’s true. I like people, and I am creative, bursting with ideas if given the opportunity to express them. While I’m new, I am excited and hopeful for the work I can do here in Denver with our clients and their companies. As our CEO said in a speech recently, “There is a difference between talking at someone and talking with someone.”
Since I love people, I want to hear their needs and wishes for their companies and take those desires and turn them into concrete ideas. There is nothing more satisfying to me than having someone’s story or company news shared in the press. I love the process of crafting a message and then delivering it on behalf of someone else.
dovetail solutions prides itself on community involvement – another reason I felt as though I’d truly be a fit here. I am a wellness activist to the maximum degree, focusing largely on eating disorder recovery and body image positivity. When I heard how much effort dovetail puts into giving back to the Denver community, I knew again that this would be the fit, and that I would not have to balance my personal activism with my career, but instead combine the two into my career.
Ultimately, I am grateful to be here in Denver, and even more grateful to be working with a company that is held in such high esteem by the people around them. I’m learning a lot in my first couple of weeks, and Denver is truly beginning to feel like home.
