A Denver native, Andy Boian founded dovetail solutions, a full-service firm specializing in media relations, branding, messaging, crisis and issues management, public affairs, digital marketing and social. The firm works to build mutually beneficial relationships to maximize opportunity through relationship-building and trust as opposed to a transactional-based model only. As a result, his peers, named dovetail the PRSA “Public Relations Firm of the Year” in 2015.
He began his career in 1991 as a speechwriter and political strategist, and then as a corporate communications executive for a large telecommunications firm, with national responsibility, strategy and planning, and oversight.
In addition to decades of PR and marketing experience, Andy is active in electoral politics at both the regional and national levels, working with a number of candidates and issue-based campaigns, and as an elected official. He has served as a senior campaign strategist and advisor for more than 25 years and most recently as chairman of the campaign of California’s 40th and current governor, Gavin Newsom.
Additionally, he served on the transition teams for both the nation’s 42nd president and a cabinet member of the nation’s 43rd president and has supported Senator John McCain. He has been on the faculty of the University of Denver, the University of Colorado and Arapahoe Community College as well as Metropolitan State University of Denver for over a decade and was named a favorite professor two separate times.
Andy is a recipient of the Denver Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” award, the Colorado Statesman’s “Fifty for the Future” and Metropolitan State University of Denver’s “Mover and Shaker” award. Additionally, Andy was recognized by his alma mater as an Alumnus of Distinction in 2011, the first in political science in the history of the university. In 1999, he was asked to run as a Colorado representative of the Democratic National Committee. After a successful campaign, he served four years at the national level.
Andy is active in the Denver philanthropic community. In 2008, he founded ExecConnect, a unique 501c3 comprised of successful leaders from across industries with a mission to give back to the Denver metro area through numerous ongoing initiatives. The foundation has been successful in a wide foray of solutions including the launching of Denver’s Bike Share Program, a mentoring program to keep at-risk high school students on track to graduate and helping to reconnect a vibrantly changing neighborhood northeast of downtown Denver. For nine years, Andy served on the board of the Henry C. Kempe Foundation, the nation’s leader in the treatment and prevention of child abuse and neglect, including two years as its chairman. He served six years on the board of the Denver Botanic Gardens including two years as vice-chairman. He is currently a board member of the Denver Association of Professional Services (DAPS), Turbine Labs, the PIVOT Foundation and the Denver Scholarship Foundation. He also advises nonprofit organizations on strategic planning and tangible objective results-based processes. He is a frequent guest commentator on television and radio news programs, is a contracted senior political analyst for Denver’s Fox television network news and speaks regularly to audiences on corporate and community relationships, specifically focusing on how to better allow both to thrive together. Additionally, Andy contributes dovetail solutions’ resources and assets gratis on a regular and sustained basis.
