The Dos and Don’ts of Working from Home (including convincing the boss)

Monday, June 21, 2010 at 2:02PM Do approach the boss with a business-like plan outlining the benefits to the company—increased productivity, fewer distractions, more hours worked (since you won’t be commuting for over an hour a day).
Do propose to the boss a 90-day trial period to start.
Don’t talk about why it will be better for you and your family.
Do turn in assignments ahead of schedule and even volunteer for more work (since the boss is probably skeptical about the whole deal anyway).
Do over-communicate with the boss, clients and fellow workers—since they all think you’re watching TV or taking a nap at times.
Don’t flaunt the fact you work from home to your co-workers—it will only cause the boss grief and may cause you to lose the privilege.
Don’t expect the company to provide all the new technology needed, at least until the trial period is over and the boss is convinced it’s a good idea.
